Tombstones


Shown below are a sample of some of the more intriguing tombstones which we have come across in past years. Some of these photos are also featured on the appropriate town pages; however many stones are featured only on this page.

As noted elsewhere, I have no knowledge of Hebrew or Yiddish and so in the vast majority of instances I have no knowledge of the written information that may be found on any particular stone. Rather, I photograph the stones for their beauty or their poignancy or their loneliness. I cannot count the number of times I have wondered about when the next visitor will appear in a particular spot and about what that visitor may find when he arrives. Making a photo is simply a way to pay respect and to make a very small record of what once was.
