Chernivtsi

The cemetery in Chernivtsi is one of the more interesting that I have encountered.  The attraction stems from a combination of the majestic pre-burial house, some absolutely exquisite artwork on the stones, and the lush vegetation that has overrun some parts of the cemetery.  In 2010 we visited Chernivtsi in very late August in the hope that the vegetation would be coloful but not too luxurious.  That did not turn out to be the case.  The vegetation was green and growing and made access to parts of the cemetery and to individual stones very difficult if not impossible.

In 2011 we returned to Chernivtsi in May in the hope of arriving before the vegetation grew waist high, and we were optimistic given that cold weather lingered in that part of the world until just prior to our arrival; however, as is plain from the photos, the vegetation was already lush and tall.
